The only way he becomes a UFA through arbitration is if the Habs walk away from the award, and there is no way that is going to happen. The arbitration application is for administrative purposes only. No team really wants to go to arbitration with a player, but filing for it prevents other teams from giving an offer sheet.

Patches should sign an extension sometime next season, as Gorges did. Probably around Jan 1, or the All-Star break. There's really no rush to do it. If he has another season like this one then he's going to get Cory Perry/James Neal type money, and frankly, he would deserve it.

It's not really something that the Habs should worry about this summer. Price, Subban & Emelin are priority signings since like Pacioretty they are core members of the club going forward.
