An NCAA player can leave at any time, in-season or not, and enter into a CHL or pro contract (ie. Coyle left mid-December in-season from BU for Saint John in the QMJHL); there are no deadlines that I'm aware of, hence why the NCAA gets bitter when prospects or scholarships spurn them, especially for the CHL. The players just have to be of age to play in the AHL if they're not making the jump straight to the NHL.
