I tend to believe that voting results in any given season are only loosely reflective of value. Over time, they tell a valuable story, but in any given season, they can be misleading. I think if Markov returned to his previous level of play, he's be about twice a 2nd team AST in 4-5 seasons. That level of play...hmmm...yeah, but the HHOF is cruel to modern offensive defensemen. Clark Gillies was a hall of famer for how many years before Mark Howe was inducted? J.C. Tremblay will not see the HHOF in his own lifetime, which I consider an obvious misjudgment and/or prejudice based on WHA association.

On the other hand, Larry Murphy is in the Hall with three 2nd ASTs, four Cups and a ton of career value to his credit, so there is probably your lower boundary for modern offensive defensemen. A tough standard.
