I like Leopold, but San Jose doesn't need a top pairing defenceman. We need a 2nd pairing kind of guy who can take Fahey or Davison out of a regular role. Therefore I wouldn't necessarily look at Leopold unless he could be had as a bargain.

Secondly, the Sharks have plenty of future 20-30 goal guys coming through the pipeline right now. Cheechoo is already there and still young, and you can add Setoguchi, Bernier, Michalek, and very probably (but not certainly) Kaspar to that mix. The Sharks won't be starved for goals in the future (and we aren't really starved for goals right now anyway).

The last thing is that you cannot value Marleau as a 2nd line center just because he's the 2nd line center of teh Sharks. There's a reason he's on the 2nd line. It's called JOE THORNTON. On probably 90% of the other teams in the NHL (including admittedly Calgary, since that's why you want Marleau), he'd be the undisputed 1st line center, and therefore should be valued as such. The Sharks are quite happy with their 1-2 punch down the middle, and just because they have a top line player on their 2nd line as a matter of circumstance doesn't mean he's expendable.

As has been said, people are examining San Jose's needs all wrong. The Sharks have a good group of forwards, and a nice group of 3-4 defencemen to fill out most of the depth chart (Hannan and McLaren at the top end, Preissing in the high-middle range, and Murray is a god fit on the bottom pairing). The problems for San Jose have been finding a reliable guy to take that #4-#5 spot away from role players, and also our goaltending situation, for which there isn't a good quick fix available, since Toskala and Nabokov should be, by all rights, one of the league's better tandems.
