Why would he resign as a backup and Lehner breathing down his neck when he could be a potential starter somewhere else. Another option is have Bishop as a backup next year get 20 games before the trade deadline and then trade him and bring up Lehner.
The group 6 free agent thing isn't clear, but he may be a RFA after next year.
1) He never became a group 6 FA.
2) He hasn't played 7 nhl seasons, or turned 27.
