If Olympic hockey was played during the Summer games as Mark Brender has suggested in this week's THN, you would still demand Forsberg play in the NHL playoffs this Spring.
You wouldn't care that he might be injured and miss the Olympics, so please don't try to argue that this is about time off to recuperate for what comes next. It's not and we both know it.
the Olympics are a bonus... the Flyers are a job. THAT is a difference. every ticket i purchase, my cable bill, etc. all go to pay his
. disregarding the fact that I am a Flyer fan, he's chosen hockey to be his profession and the only way to make a living doing that is to have a team pay you for your services, the Swedish team doesn't do this... the team that has the playoffs does.
so, yeah, i'd demand that he EARN his friggin 5 MILLION dollar check. i don't think that's unreasonable. if the Olympics -- or international play in general -- are more important to him... hang out in Sweden, train with the international team, slice meat for a living, and play in international tournaments whenever the hell you want. HOWEVER, if you make the decision to receive currency for your play that allows you to enjoy a very comfortable living... some things are expected of you. like being healthy for that teams games.
sorta like, ya know, showing up for work each day... so, the above, is a completely backwards argument and completely ignores some rather important aspects of the relationships here.
for the record, i wouldn't be nearly as annoyed about this if he was healthy when he went over there... and a continuance, once the NHL -- or whatever professional league's play is over -- you're free to do whatever you want. i would argue, that a team should be capable of voiding a contract if a player suffers a serious injury playing in games that have no meaning to the NHL. NHL clubs absorb ALL of the risk in these events as of right now and with the institution of a salary cap the damage done by a star player being hurt is absolutely MASSIVE.
