I think the Habs hands are tied with the contracts given out (or acquired) by the previous GM. I'm sure that Gainey would rather not have to play guys like Quintal & Audette, but no one would pick up those contracts, and Gainey already bought out Czerkawski & McKay's contract.

I think that Habs have just painted themselves in the corner by continually acquiring marginal players instead of picks when moving assets over the last 2-3 years. I'm thinking of guys like Traverse, and to a lesser extent Sundstrom. Teams don't wants to pay barely adequate 3rd-4th liners $1.8M, but that Habs have 2 of them.
