Skating speed= power+footspeed/agility+technique

power= strength/explosiveness

1) build strength through a weight lifting program (squats are the most important hockey exercise)

2) plyometrics are great for further increasing explosiveness + footspeed(box jumps, floor ladder etc.)

3) technique, get on the ice as much as you can, pick-up games, public skating, local pond, rec league, rent the ice etc, etc. Study the pros technique. +take a good power skating course

You can add in short stop & start runs, & other things to keep it interesting.
