If in year 3 and 4 he plays like a 1-2mil guy no one would care if he played like a 5-6mil guy in year 1 and 2 since he'll be taking up 4.5mil in cap. Why do you think the Gauthier won Cole? No other team was willing to risk that term. Say what you want about Gomez, but he did fall off the cliff from form 8 straight 55+ pts seasons to 3rd/4th liner in one year. Cammy and Gionta had a pretty good 1st couple seasons too, people view them as garbage/bad moves, overpaid etc. So will Cole pay off? I hope so, but it's far too soon to pass judgement on the move since the risk of the deal kicks in year 3 and 4 where the risk of injuries/regression due to age is high.
On the other hand the cap usually rises steadily so Cole's salary will be less of a burden in a few years and he should be movable if he doesn't fit with the team anymore. Gomez is different, his salary is huge even by today's standards.

I also think Cole won't ever become useless. He's a physical player, a leader and too hard of a worker for that. At worse he'll be a great bottom 6 player. Its just sad that him being a bargain this year is irrelevant due to the team's lack of success.
