There is also an error in your thinking as well. In the salary cap era, Kasper's $3.34m & Malik's $2.5m are all but impossible to move. Or rather that it is not they are unmoveable, but the player that you are getting for such a price is not moveable. No team is going to trade for Malik's $2.5m contract. On most NHL teams, he is a third-pairing defenseman. And no team is going to have a #5-6 defenseman make that much.
And Kasper's $3.34 are not going anywhere for the next two years. The best shot to trade either of them will be at the deadline in 3 years, becuase the trading team will not be on the hook for that much in the following year.
