I'm not underrating anyone. I wouldn't mind having Conroy as devil.
BUT HE IS AN UFA. A RENTAL
If you are sureing up your lineup for a playoff run and not filling a hole, why do you give up any part of your machine? You give up spare parts and prospects nothing more. Unless you believe that player will be signing with you after the season and/or maybe the player is a significant upgrade over what you are giving.
But in this CBA environment maybe teams will pay a little more for a UFA? Because there is no obligation when the season ends. Maybe that is more attractive to someone like Lou?
Look back at the UFA deals in the past. The Most I can recall the devils paying for one was Souray for Malakov. I believe Phil Housely came to the devils for a pick. At the time Housely was a top 20/25 D-man for a pick.
I'm not making any comments about Conroy's ability, just the trade value for UFA.
A rental is worth a pick or prospect maybe both depending on the situation.
And think about it, there are alot of players out there in Conroy's position.....Joe Nieuwendyk, Vincent Damphousse, Mike Ricci, Dallas Drake, Kelly Buchberger, Mike Sillinger, Joe Juneau, Shaun Van Allen, Brian Rolston, Ron Francis, Alexei Zhamnov, Perrauelt.... And those are just the Centers.........maybe Gratton(Not UFA), Maybe Oates
Lots of good UFA's out there that can be moved to fill a need.
The market will prove to be very soft for these players. No body is gonna give Cheap young talent for a rental. Especially when people are talking about a cap. Picks, mid level prospects and role players are what you are looking at here.
So we'll see.
But if I'm betting, I sure as hell aint betting on players coming back for UFA's.
