If a coach or a player has money on one particular game, it changes his incentives. He wants to win that one particular game regardless of possible consequences down the road.

Imagine a coach playing his best players half the game in just another regular season game.

More importantly, it puts the player or coach in contact with gamblers, and possibly in debt to gamblers. It may start with simply betting on one's own team, but it may not end there.
