Personally I'd love to have Suter... but I wouldn't mind having Carle and a group of well rounded D-men working as a team.
Suter and Carle are in the same boat. Do you uproot your young families, in a city you love with a team and teammates you love, to eke an extra million/yr over a 7 year contract?
Let's say Suter might get $7M or $7.5M on the open UFA market, Carle might get $5.5M. But would playing with Jack Johnson and Wizniewski in Columbus be worth it if he could stay for 7 years at $6.5M in Nashville?? Really? Let's face it, these guys are already set for life, the next contract is the great- grandchilden's retirement fund at this point.
You talk to your wife, your agent, your parents, and you think, well, $6.5M to stay in Nashville and $4.8M to stay in Philly might really be the best option.
We'll see. Both guys have expressed a preference to stay put and both teams are stacked with top end talent and youth to compete for the next several years. Would Suter be happier in Montreal or Edmonton and Carle in Toronto or Winnipeg? I haven't done any real analysis of which teams have need+cap room+cash to spend, but the grass might not be greener.
