I don't know about all of this "he was drafted too high" business. It's not like that was a highly-touted draft class that has set the world on fire and we passed on a bunch of can't-miss prospects who panned out to take him. Many of the guys taken in the first-round that year have shown less than Manny has at the NHL level. Yeah, you hope you get an all-star when you draft high, but it rarely works out that way. A third-liner is a lot more than what many other teams got out of the first-round that year. It was stupid of Smith to talk him up as a franchise player so early in his career, it was unfair of fans to dismiss him as a useless bust when he didn't live up to those expectations.
Who knows what he'd have become if he hadn't been so horribly mishandled and a pawn in a power struggle between Muckler and Smith? Maybe he'd have lived up to Smith's lofty billing of him, maybe he'd be no better than he is now, we'll never know. But I hope I never a Ranger first-round pick jerked around like that again. (Doh! Blackburn, I forgot. Oh well.)
It'll be interesting to see of anyone else takes a chance on him.
