That's not entirely true. Umberger was moved to wing because he was the player that could make the transition easiest. He was originally brought up as Primeau's replacement but with Patrick Sharp still in the lineup before he was traded, going along with Forsberg, Handzus, Carter and Richards, he was the most logical to move to wing. Forsberg was the #1 guy, Zus was already moved to play wing some nights with Richards, and it was decided that Carter couldn't make the transition (because he didn't develop INSTANT chemistry with Forsberg on opening night). So yes, skillwise there were more talented centres on the team, but Umberger was only moved out of sheer necessity. Handzus had already made the transition and Carter was supposed to but wasn't given enough of a chance.
