I am pretty forgetful so when I get into a game I generally only remember about saving/loading after things have already gotten past the point of no return. I do agree that certain games tend to have overly severe consequences if you lose, which forces players into more of a save/load mindset.
I think the MMO playstyle might be one of the influences at work here. You can do whatever idiotic thing you wish and generally your character is fine again after the respawn timer runs down. I think people are looking for a similar situation in other types of games now too. I can remember the days of the original C&C and Civ titles and hardly saving at all. Then your NOD base gets hit with Orcas and you forgot to build missile silos and you start the whole thing over again.
