Hawks GM comments:
The Chicago Blawkhawks are proud to announce the acquisition of Thomas Plekanec and Raphael Diaz. Yes we sacrificed some of our future and cheap scoring depth, however, our goal is to win now and we believe Thomas Plekanec helps with that goal. He is one of the league's premier two-way forwards and will allow us to strengthen our center depth. We feel extremely comfortable moving forward with Toews, Plekanec and Bolland down the middle. We believe we have become a more well-rounded team. Moreover this move allows us to move Patrick Sharp to the wing on a full-time basis. Thomas Plekanec also helps solidify our second line not only defensively, but offensively as well.
Raphael Diaz is has some good potential. He has excellent gap control and reads the play very well. He brings even more mobility to our back and we hope that he can solidify our bottom pairing. We believe that he still has room to grow as a player and we are proud to have him do so as a Hawk.
As was said earlier, we sacrificed the future for short-term gain, however, we believe that we have a relatively deep prospect pool at the forward position which allowed to make such a trade. We are sad to see Stalberg and Montador go. We hope that by moving to Montreal that Stalberg is able to have a greater role. Unfortunately, the salary cap changes team-player relations and forces us to make decisions we otherwise wouldn't make. Moving Montador brings us a little cap relief going forward which will allow us to make moves in the future.
Are we done? No. No team is ever done. If there is room for improvement, whether short-term or long-term, we will consider it. Obviously short-term is a priority as we feel that a window is open for us within the next couple of years to contend for the cup, but long-term moves are not out of the question if they are appropriate.
