That was deliberate. I could be (and hope to be) wrong, but I don't think that Yzerman is going to go out and spend a big wad of $ on the free agent market for multiple D. Think he'll prefer to go into the season with an improved roster, expecting it will pay dividends in the standings and look to make an additional move for the defense at or before the trade deadline a la the Brewer trade. It's delayed gratification, but the most cost-effective way of adding your second top-4 D.
