If the Jets want someone who can deliver 10 points over a season, they can pay a lot less and get a lot more effort from whatever fringe player they bring in.
Additionally, one has to question the "leadership" value that Gomez supposely brings; sooner or later you have to back it up with your play... and it's been a long time since that's happened.
Gomez's actual salary isn't as outrageous as his cap hit over the final 2 years of his contract. It's still pretty ridiculous. I'd take Gomez and Montreal's 2nd rounder next season...but then Montreal's got the money to bury him in the AHL next year and keep their pick, so I don't imagine they'll be trading Gomez+ for a bag of pucks.
