X and O thoughts about the Predators system
For those of you more X and O oriented, i'm curious as to what you think about a couple of aspects of the Predators system.
1) We are one of the only teams in the league to use a man defensive system. With the emphasis on blocked shots that teams like Phoenix and New York are having great success with, are we missing the boat here? Man systems may allow some blocks from the point by the man defender, but it is difficult to generate the multiple blockers that we saw Phoenix utilize in our series. You may recall that we didn't fare well against New York either this year. In general, I thought that our point shots were coming way too late, because the second or two we took to make a decision to shoot from the point were enough to put the blockers into position.
2) I understand that Coach Trotz wants his centers to be very defensively responsible, but I am just not sold on either Legwand or Fisher in a scoring line roles. To me, these guys are prototypical very high quality lower line centers that could give other teams scoring lines fits and make lower lines into scoring threats as well as good defensively. I could even see playing them on the same line so that two faceoff options would be present on a 3rd line for instance. One could do the same thing with Spaling and Gausted on the 4th line. Looking at what we lost from this team, I would say that that Marcel Goc is the player we miss the most. Scoring line centers of Wilson and Goc would have offered a lot more creativity then we are getting now as a compliment to our scoring forwards.
