Briere doesn't work anywhere near a shutdown line even if you flank him with Datsyuk and Toews. We need Couturier to be out shutdown center because we don't have anyone else. He can't be stuck babysitting Briere.

Briere is no longer a fit as this team is constructed IMO. The reason why HBL was good and finished on the positive side of the ledger last season was because Laviolette was able to completely shelter them. The Richards and Carter lines were given the tough minutes while the HBL line got to face the weakest competition and were mostly deployed in the offensive zone. We can't do that now because we don't have the horses.

BTW this is how the Brown line is succeeding in LA. Richards/Carter and the Fraser lines are doing the heavy lifting defensively while the Brown line is getting soft minutes to beat up on the bottom lines.
