Agree Coots was our best defensive forward, but shutdown ace is a little over the top. You don't become an ace because of one playoff series. I remember Gionta & Gomez (Montreal) shutting down Pitt & Wash top lines in back to back series in the playoffs a couple years ago. They weren't shutdown aces either.
John Madden was a shutdown ace for years, but didn't get that label after one year and one playoff series.
He was shutting people down all season, and then did a damn fine job against the 2011/2012 seasons best player.
Sometimes the other team just plays better. The Devils were committed from top to bottom, and they did enough to beat the Flyers.
