Try an exercise where you do a forward stride keeping the toe of your skate constantly in touch with the ice. Even the return movement has to be done with the toe of the skate touching the ice. While you're doing this, bend your knees as much as you can and extend your leg out as far as you can while you stride.

The more you bend your knees, the longer your stride. Try out this idea. Stand up really straight and stride vs low knee bend and stride.
