NBA teams dont draft 18 year olds right out of high school unless they are an exceptional talent. And, just the same, 18 years olds dont enter the draft unless they are sure they will be drafted.

That means most of the players drafted into the NBA have already proven themselves at the college level. Even after just one year of NCAA play players are much more ready to step in and contribute and you have a much better idea of what you are getting when you pick. You cant really compare draft age players because they are further along in their development.
