Actually, it just said that Gainey had to explain himself on Tuesday morning, which says to me that the press, and specifically RDS, was going to attack him with questions on why there were too many right defenders in Montreal. It doesn't say anywhere that Gainey was going to hold a press conference to explain the situation.
Having said that, however, I still have to believe something is up in Montreal, notwithstanding all the trade 'rumours' posted here. There are too many things coming out that are inconsistent with running a franchise optimally.
And as for losing hope of any trade happening by 1:00 in the afternoon, that's just plain silly. I remeber a few years back when the GM told the coach to hold back a player in the third period because a trade had happened in the second intermission. Remember, these GM's all work late, particularly on game nights, so I would not be surprised to see it anything happen even within about an hour after the game.
Oh, and we play Washington on Friday night, so if they're the trading partner, it would only make sense to wait until after that game to finalize the deal so each team wouldn't have to be burned by the player(s) it traded away.
Just some thoughts.
A concerned fan.
