I'm not even sure why 1997 is even being brought up. That was an old team with many of the players being past their prime. The Rangers didn't have any young talent, due in part to some bad trades by Smith, and we didn't have many promising prospects in the pipeline. They lost Messier in the offseason and replaced him with more old bums like Skrudland and Kevin Stevens. That sort of situation won't be happening this offseason.
