I see this mentioned a lot but I don't buy into the argument as much as others do.
I understand the point about waivers in the first year that there is a contract for the second year and a dollar amount, but as to claiming him, a team claims a player to put him on the NHL roster, not to send him to the minors. They can't send him to the minors without giving other teams a chance to claim him.
And his AHL salaries are on the high end anyway.
He made 300,000 on the AHL side of his contract this season; 200,000 next season according to the news. Salary has no impact on waivers on the way down.
As to re-entry waivers, 200,000/300,000/500,000,600,000 doesn't matter unless the rules change. He will be exempt or require re-entry based on the games portion of the minor league vet rule not salary.
As to the two year contract structured like this, it's not unusual for some high-end AHL players signing 2 year deals. For example, Aucoin, AGordon. Sometimes it relates to re-entry waivers, but not in Bourque's case.
