Sanford actually got the starters job as Mason just kept being Raycroft 2.0 (wanted to gloat and mention I called this happening during his rookie year), but according to their beat writer, CBJ wanted him on a 2 way contract again if they were going to re-sign him
Signing a 2 way contract after winning the starting gig and doing well isn't something any career backup is going to be willing to sign. He probably felt lowballed and thought with how Vokoun is getting very little interest there may be no market for him on a 1 way deal
