Hamrlik is less than he was a few years ago, and I don't think we would have been a good team without Hamrlik back. But we needed a well rounded defender who could play in all situations last year, and could have been trusted with big minutes.

I think the Habs would have been better off giving Hammer a two year deal than Gill a one (everything you say about Hamrlik applies to Gill too, plus he's worse at everything except penalty kills).

Though an even better option would have been to find a Hamrlik replacement.
