Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the Montreal thing. I have been there a few times in the summer and winter and I have to say I was fairly underwhelmed based on high expectations. I quite liked the old town with the European feel to it, but it is only a small area and tends to be very touristy. Much of the rest of the city just felt kinda run-down to me. I can't comment on the wild nightlife, as I have typically been there with the family, but from what I have experienced Toronto is a more diverse and interesting option.

Having said that the key with most cities is knowing where to look to find what interests you.

If you want the quaint European style winter wonderland I would say Quebec City is a much better bet.
