He wanted 7.5 million, and he wanted 5 years. This was the maximum salary possible under the cap at the time.

Ottawa still had to sign Heatley and Spezza the following year, and Redden was willing to go as low as 6 million (if Chara signed for 6) or 6.5 million over a much shorter term of 3 years.

And, unfortunately for Chara, he'd played with a broken wrist and was horrendous in the playoffs that year.

Chara is certainly worth the value of his contract, but there were reasons why they didn't give him what he wanted.

It was still a very divisive decision at the time. Chara was/is a unique quantity in the league, and he's proven that with Boston.
There are reports he wanted the C too, and we all know that would be unacceptable in Ottawa.

He didn't have a Stanley Cup when he got his contract. It's all about comparables when you are talking contracts in the NHL.

At the time of signing the contract:

Doughty had one Norris nomination
Karlsson has one Norris nomination (that may be a win)
