It may be a "life experience" thing too. If you haven't had a sibling, parent, aunt/uncle or grandparent, or really good friend, die, it may be hard to identify with. (Let's see, I've lost 4 grands, one great grand, a few great aunts/uncles, couple of cousins, and a handful of close friends.)

(Think of Harry Potter with those creatures that pulled the coaches -- not visible to those who have never seen death.)
