Is he going to win a cup? Who knows? Willie Mitchell just won a cup so anything is possible.
What Vancouver needs to realize is that Luongo's value is higher to Vancouver than it is to other teams. Schneider is a good goaltender but we haven't seen him play in the NHL on a regular basis yet. People have sent Luongo up the river without seeing if the Schneider boat can handle the current.
I will stand by my prediction that Luongo goes to Florida. Here is a GM who has the cap room, doesn't have a sustainability plan in net, but has a potential NHL goaltender that they drafted last year.
Does Florida beat New Jersey if Luongo was in net instead of Theodore/Clemmenson?
If he does go to Florida I would see the following scenario:
To FLA: Luongo
To VAN: some mid-level AHL prospect
+ a current roster player like Versteeg whom Vancouver has no interest in re-signing but will wait for an offer sheet
+ a 2nd round pick in next year's draft
+ a 1st round pick in next year's draft - Can't you see Florida potentially winning the division again next year with an upgrade in net? This pick would be in the bottom half of the first round.
For Vancouver, they could probably get a better deal if cap space weren't an issue but it is.
Good one. Or Florida could add the rights to Garrison who the Canucks might like and is from Van (instead of a Verseeg).
