Rangers team concept is built around defense and Marc Staal fits very prominently in that. Personally I think all of McDonagh, Girardi, Staal are close to the same level with McDonagh being the youngest having a bit more upside.

Forget this talk about elite or top 15-20 d-men in the league. Those things can be argued forever. And it's not worth comparing the point totals and Norris trophies of Chara, Karlssson, Weber, Keith, Doughty either. To me it comes down to the Rangers have a great young defense and have absolutely no reason to break it up. Staal at least when he's healthy is one of the best shutdown d-men in the league because like the rest of the Staal's he's a great skater and has size and strength and is very hockey smart. He's physical without going out of control--can bang around with the Malkin's and Ovechkin's--and has a quick stick and a long reach--excellent at breakouts. He's just not that great of an offensive player.

Really there's maybe only Skinner of all the Hurricanes players that would make sense for us in a one on one deal and it's pointless to accept a package of lesser parts--especially if they're older and expensive lesser parts.
