At nearly 7.73 per, Vinny's is just not a contract anyone should want, and that's the biggest part of it. But there's more:

Over the past four seasons, Jumbo has 322 points, Vinny has 240, good for a 21.5 point average difference. Not to mention the huge gap in their teams' successes, to which each player has played his part. I'd say they are more than a modest defensive upgrade apart in trade value, and that's before looking at their respective contract situations. Lecavalier has another 8 years and 55-million coming, whereas Thornton only has 2 more for 13-million, and is only a year older. It isn't close.
