You are just so misguided on this issue except for value of the trade.

Hammer didn't even close to suck this year, his positional play was probably the best of his career. He still hasn't engaged physically or used his offensive tool set the way we'd like but it's clear to see he is becoming more confident with the NA game imo. Factor in the fact that every partner he played with this year was awful defensively.

Schenn just is an awful d man. Sucks at skating, awful positioning, and constantly makes bad reads. He has potential but will never reach it due to his skating, Hammer actually is a good skater so I think the chances he reaches his potential is much greater.

The trade was about two players who have potential and are struggling were swapped for needs. Toronto needs top 6 help, the Flyers need D help. Both players signed big contracts and then sucked.

Not that complex, you just have no idea for player evaluation.
