You are getting 10 more goals and 16 more assists and paying $7MM more dollars for that privilege. Not a wise investment in my book
I think the Rangers could go different ways and wind up in a better spot:
1) Spend bigger money on a more productive UFA like Parise.
2) Trade for a better, young player making the same type of money you'd pay Doan or Whitney - someone like Bobby Ryan or Keith Yandle.
3) Trade for Nash if you can get him on the cheap in terms of the package going the other way. Sure, you have a big salary on the books but you're getting bigger production and he's not ancient at 27.
4) Go after a cheaper UFA who could produce on a similar level, like Hudler or Kostitsyn. I know they're not perfect but they've got offensive upside and won't cost $4MM per year.
Hags and AA would both be on the 3rd line so ur not replacing them. Just moving them down, so anything u get from Doan and Whitney, is added to the talent last year. Therefore more goals
