I concur. I would rather have a less than satisfactory defense for a year then a cap nightmare for 5. I don't see Carle as being the missing piece of a Stanley Cup parade. Is he better than not having him? Sure. But he isn't a key piece. I don't see this team as a top 5 Cup contender next season with or without Carle. We would still be behind the likes of Pitt, NYR, and Boston for sure in the East. I recognize that with luck, all things are possible, but I'd rather not rely on luck.

Let's say they sign Carle to a 5.5 mil 5 yr contract. How good will that make us when Simmonds, Giroux, Schenn, Couturier are all coming off contracts? Is Carle's contract worth getting rid of young forwards? I don't think so. I'd rather have the freedom to sign those players and not have to worry about another stupid long term inflated contract.
