Difference between 2007 and 2012 is that no one thought 2007 was anything special at the time.
McDonagh was taken where he was projected to go, but playing in a Minnesota High School league, your average fan knew nothing about him. We only had reports to go on.
Max Pacioretty was the intriguing pick. He was also chosen around his projection, but a lot of people loved his package of size, speed and shot. A lot of non-Habs fans liked the pick.
Subban was simply seen as a PP specialist, nothing more. He couldn't be trusted even strength, wasn't big enough, etc. The hype started building when we heard him speak for the first time. People loved his character and Habs fans believed he could be something more. It turned out most of us, and Timmins, were right.
The thing that scares me about 2012 is that everyone thinks the Habs stole the show. There are lofty expectations.
