....Trotts you love to bash the Isles but don't you don't dare try to bash the Captain, captain huh what a joke that is...
Weinie, you are entitled to your opinion, as am I. Based on production, I too would prefer Mark Messier this season, considering that he has 10 goals compared to Peca's two.
I think, however, that the level of importance you place on the "C" may be over the top.
And you are blurring the lines between "leadership" and production. That is a fair perspective, and happens to be one I share. (That is, no matter how great a lockeroom speech you give, how wonderful you may be with the pom-poms, etc, you still have to
perform on the ice
in order to command respect of your teammates and peers.) However, if Peca's lack of production makes him a "poor captain" this year, was he a "good captain" in '01-'02, when he produced on the ice and the team achieved 96 regular season points? I think those of you who are looking to single out the Captain for the
that are wrong with NYI are presenting as "fact" your pure speculation that he is "a bad guy in the lockeroom," etc. One cannot defend his lack of offense this year, and his overall play of late has been listless. However, making assertions about the guy's character is another thing entirely. That's worse than bashing, that's tabloid rumor-mongering.
As for your choices for captain, not going to judge them, except to say that if you consider those three players more talented than Mike Peca, we disagree. And in the case of Asham and Mapletoft, bigtime. Regardless, it really doesn't matter. Milbury can name God captain tomorrow and this is still a mediocre team.
Finally, I enjoy bashing the Isles? Please make the distinction between a homer and one who tries to look at the game objectively. You see, I was fortunate enough as a teenager to have experienced the dynasty years. Anything less than contending for the Cup does not do it for me. And it's been 20 years and counting.
