Re. Gleason: personally I think it was over money more than anything else. Gleason wanted big money and he wanted to play in the NHL sooner rather than later in order to extract the best out of a two-way contract. The Sens at the time were broke, they were asking their own players to defer salary just to make ends meet and the Sens depth was fine at D; Gleason was surely headed to Binghamton for a few years for seasoning.
Not being able to get a deal done, I figured Muckler just dealt this asset away now for some help for the playoffs rather than just get second round compensation at the draft that may or may not help the Sens in a few years.
I still think the Sens should have signed Gleason sooner but the money probably wasn't there. This was one of the few times the Sens traded youth for experience, an unusual turn of events.
