This point gets lost--it really isn't about length--it's about how the money is distributed over time--and whether a player is likely to play for that.
I think the Kovalchuk contract had him playing like 4 years at the league minimum at the end, or something similarly absurd. That was the problem.
i know distribution is the problem but does anyone honestly expect Suter to be playing at close to 40? If not he wouldn't be seeing a decent chunk of this money because the contract is legit, so why would he sign that contract instead of a shorter term deal with someone who can actually afford it like say detroit?
