They were able to trade them because they had depth up front.

Spare me the BS that trading Staal would crush the organization. If you can get a player like Bobby Ryan or Rick Nash for Marc Staal, you make that trade 1000 times out of 1000 because the Rangers have the depth on defense to make up for his loss.
