Listening to a recent interview with Green he mentioned hoping that an agreement happens before tomorrow (7/5), which is the last day for players to file for arbitration. Not that a deal couldn't get done prior to the eventual arbitration date but this would be the least preferable route I think.
Either commit to the player or don't. Don't make next season all about him proving himself and running the risk of losing him for nothing. I can understand that reasoning with wingers but less so top 4 D when replacements aren't readily available. Of course, 52 has to be reasonable in his demands as well. Tough situation.
