Hudler played the PP QB all last season on the 2nd unit - although he would have created another 15-20 goals if it been him up front instead of Bert/Cleary, with any of the defensemen or especially a Lids/Kron/White rotation through the four spots.
Sammy is maybe as gritty. Bigger yes. But Huds is plenty gritty.
Also, with Parise gone, Semin, Selanne and Doan are the the only 50+ point forwards left. Wellwood also scored at that pace. Nobody else left did it. I posted previously that we needed at least one if not two guys out of the 50+ group. Selanne, and Doan are pretty unlikely. Wellwood would make a solid third line center (especially with his killer faceoff skills), but I don't see that signing happening because of Babcock's obsession with putting Helm into that spot NOW. Semin... maybe. But that leaves us with Dats, Z, Semin, Flip, Franzen, and Sammy or Bert as our top six. Cleary if we're lucky and he returns to his form from a couple years ago.
Hudler only signed in Calgary because Holland signed Sammy. Holland could have kept him, especially after losing Parise.
Right now it looks pretty grim. Who do we sign on defense... Scott Hannan? Michal Rosival? Carlo Coliacovo?
Holland made a mistake by signing Sammy instead of Hudler, and assuming that he would get Parise and Suter. He should have cut loose of them on the morning of the third or even the fourth if possible when it became apparent that the top guys were going away; at that point he should have gone after Hudler (having not signed Sammy), Semin, and Carle. Having those three are better than having just Parise and Suter for the same money.
At this point we're looking at Semin, possibly a Rick Nash trade (Franzen/Jurco/1st?), plus sending Smith and maybe also Quincey out of town (plus prospects/picks) in some kind of deal to get a defenseman. Who knows, maybe we can get Weber. A Hannan signing might end up happening if Smith and Quincey are traded; Kronwall, ???, White, Ericsson, Hannan, Kindl, and ??? would be the defense. Weber certainly would look nice in that spot, as would Pietrangelo. Or maybe one of NYR's trio. Perhaps a three-way that ends up with Smith, Quincey, picks and prospects in New York, Pitkanen, Del Zotto, and Ruutu/Stewart in Detroit, and M.Staal plus maybe Eaves in Carolina?
Making these moves:
Two of Mursak/Emmerton/Miller
EDIT: If New York doesn't care for Quincey, replace Hannan with Quincey.
