5-7 years is what the team is expecting the player to be good for the majority of them (crosby is the exception). have you not noticed that after 5 or so years the money drops drastically for the remainder of the contract? there is a reason for that, it makes the contract easier to get away from if the player becomes nothing more then a 3rd line checker.

there will always and i mean always be teams who are cheap with real money, but need the cap hit to reach the cap floor. thats where these long term contracts become easy to trade. the team that signs them gets the best years, and then trades them when it becomes a hinderance to them.
