Jagr's last year is an club option year where the team can pay him a $1m kiss off. What the Rangers wanted Jagr to take out of the deal was a vesting clause in his Caps contract. That would give Jagr a piece(a small piece) of the team. a piece of the Caps and the same piece of the Rangers are two completely different things and they wanted him to give that up.

From what I know, I don't think the contract issues had a lot to do with the deal not getting done. The vesting is only an issue if the Rangers want to keeping that last year.
