There's nothing safer in icy conditions than FWD with proper winter tires. I wish AB would impose the same bylaws that Quebec did a few years ago and make proper winter tires mandatory after a cut off in october.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but straight line stopping is literally the only scenario in which AWD has no advantage. Even then it is equal, I fail to see how it is safer. There is no power being put to any wheels at any point during braking, regardless of AWD/FWD/RWD so what would the difference be? Or are you simply referencing the tendency for AWD/4x4 people to drive like idiots thinking they are invincible? Which I would agree with - and I drive an AWD.
But I'll tell you, when it dumps and I have to get out of my alley, I got stuck numerous times with FWD and winter tires, whereas with AWD and all seasons, I have not even been close to getting stuck, and my AWD is lower.
