Not sure why everyone is saying this is a deal to avoid the 35+ rule. Neil was born June 18, 1979 and his current contract runs out at the end of 2012/13 (technically July 1, 2013) when he would be 34.

Even if Neil was 35 July 1, 2013 (let's say he was born June 18, 1978 instead), it would count as a 35+ contract no matter when he signed it. It only matters when the actual contract starts and not when it is signed in terms of being a 35+ contract or not. Case in point is Tim Thomas' current deal. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli signed Thomas to a contract extension April 2, 2009, 13 days before Thomas turned 35, thinking that that would avoid the 35+ rule. He was wrong as what mattered was that Thomas was 35 when the contract came into effect on July 1, 2009.
