I do feel bad for the writer.

If he is indeed innocent of the charges, and they choose not to defend themselves in Canada, the defult judgement would limit his ability to have any income in Canada. He could not contribute for a Canadian paper, of be featured on Canadian news for a fee.

He could, but all his work and income would go to the default judgement.

Pretty tough pill for a student to swallow in an industry that it hard to crack.
